I loved both characters and really enjoyed following thier romance as it blossomed. I also cant say enough about several of the secondary characters! Too funny! There are Callums four closest friends; Graham the "heartthrob" who's always got a smile and a lass waitin for him. Jamie, the youngest and most "innocent" of the group, who's always picking flowers lol ,but you dont know why untill later on in the book. Brodie, the only one married but still just "one of the guys". Then theres Angus They remind me of a group of buddies from "our time",only in a rougher, highlander kinda way.
The humor and the banter that goes on between them is a hoot! Then theres Maggie margaret ,Callum's sister who's just as haunted as he is but instead of anger and violence she deals with it by being a little This book has everything in it but a scorned mistress. It's an all around great book to read and I would love for there to be more books on the other characters. I highly recommend reading.
It is a time in Scotland where the name of MacGregor has been declared under proscription; wiped out from the name of all Scottish clans. The strong and handsome highlander Callum MacGregor and his darling of a sister Maggie grow up as small children surrounded in evil as they are imprisoned and shackled deep in the Campbell's dungeon, after their family was killed, their lands taken away, and their very name wiped away as a Scottish clan.
Callum never gives up and his hatred grows as he continues to grow up in the dungeon. One day he finally escapes with Maggie by killing his captors and becoming known as the evil MacGregor. With the help of other sympathetic clans he refuses to drop away and hide as anything but a MacGregor and instead becomes their laird. As Argyll rides across the Scottish lands killing any and doing evil to those who harbor or claim to have helped the MacGregors, his beautiful niece Kate Campbell and her brother Robert, unbeknownst to them, live on Callum's previous lands, have been told that the MacGregors are considered evil, but do not understand the full effects until one day the large handsome Callum kidnaps her in order to use her as a lure to bring Argyll to him so he can finally kill him and earn his final vengeance.
As Kate lives amongst Callum, Maggie and the MacGregor people, she not only falls in love with the highlands and its people, but deeply for Callum. Maggie and many other MacGregors want peace as well and fear for their handsome and strong leader and his continued thirst for vengeance.
Can the deep, passionate and sensual love Kate feels for Callum, as well as the love of his sister Maggie and his people, make him realize the true meaning of life and happiness and overcome this severe vengeance and bloodshed? As Kate becomes possessed by Callum, the reader will become possessed by the story as well as the main and secondary characters, unable to put the book down. Laird of the Mist is a beautiful love story that will touch the deepest parts of your heart. It is masterfully written and will make you laugh and cry, with an ending that will not disappoint.
If you loved Paula Quinn's other medieval romances, you will not want to miss this one and if you haven't had the pleasure of reading one of her books before Laird of the Mist, you will want to purchase them all to add to your collection. Her masterfully written medieval historical stories are a reader's joy! A Romeo and Juliet tale with plenty of Hatfield's and McCoy's thrown into the mix, Quinn does a fine job of making the Scottish medieval setting in Laird of the Mist feel accurate and I got the feeling she threw in a bit of real history too.
The Campbells and the MacGregor's have been fighting for hundreds of years. Kate Campbell is not even sure how it all began, but she does know this- The Devil Macgregor was responsible for her Father and Grandfather's death. That's enough for her to hate ANY Macgregor on sight. When Callum Macgergor happens upon her while she and her clan are fighting a deadly battle with a rival clan, he does something totally uncharacteristic for him- he saves her then promptly rides off with her into the sunset. But that's only the beginning. Soon enough, Kate discovers exactly who her rescuer is and is forced to make a choice between the growing attraction she feels for him- or finally take out the man who has caused so much pain in her life.
Of course the more time they spend together the more they realize that both have been living under misconceptions- especially Kate- and when the truth finally comes out, Kate makes a decision to follow her heart, even if it means losing her family. I must admit that Laird of the Mist came off as too over the top for me, in many ways. Several eye rolling moments in it for me. Yet, it had a good enough plot and heated chemistry between the two protags to keep me engaged.
Kate is not only fierce, she's smart. And I really liked that once she knew she felt something for Callum, she wasn't afraid to admit it too him right away. Callum of course had to be shown the light- but even that tired plot device worked because he was attempting to keep his distance for all the right reasons. Anyone sympathetic to the MacGregors would fall to major harm not only because of his enemies but because the Clan had been annexed.
Loved it! What a great story. Adored the brave heroine.
A definite re-read. My first PQuinn but a page turner for sure! This was my first Paula Quinn novel and impressed would be an understatement. I probably should have reviewed this right after I read it but as it is, this will be short and sweet. Kate Campbell is not only beautiful but can handle a sword better than some men.
Though her guardian was Duncan Campbell Earl of Argyll, she lived at her late fathers holding being raised by a handful of his loyal soldiers. Her "dear" uncle had always promised Kate and her brother a home on his land but that day did not come for Kate until she was much older Robert was away on duty with the Earl.
She'd noticed how he gazed upon her with lustful eyes. Luckily for Kate, she never left her holding with the man but she did leave with a MAN. Callum MacGregor is a honorable and full of revenge against the man who destroyed his family, Duncan Campbell. He comes upon a raid of the Campbell's with one intention: find Duncan! Though they are sworn enemies, he does not want their demise to come from anyone but him. Then his men discover what appears to be a lass fighting for her life.
Callum and his men assist The Campbells and their prize is Kate Campbell. What better way to lure the Earl out?

What he didn't count on was a beautiful, spirited lass who just might have the key to unlock his heart. But to release his heart would betray not only his kinsmen but his honor. Callum's story is so sad. I do believe I cried a few times just reading the sorrows that he and his sister Maggie went through.
